The Visions + Voices Global Performance Series is NYU Skirball Center's thrilling new program highlighting international artists from a chosen locale. The series will bring a global site into sharp focus with dance, circus, music, theater, film, visual art,and dialogue...it will be a springtime filled with possibilities. First up: Australia!

MERYL TANKARD’S THE ORACLE
Internationally acclaimed Australian choreographer Meryl Tankard returns to New York with a solo work of astonishing physicality and intensity driven by Igor Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring.” Woven with multiple layers that explore the conflicting forces of nature and man, Tankard found the perfect collaborator in one of Australia’s most highly regarded dance artists, Paul White.

dirtsong

THE BLACK ARM BAND: DIRTSONG
Performed predominantly in Aboriginal languages, against a backdrop of evocative film imagery, dirtsong comprises a series of musical “conversations” in which the artists reflect on their country. The result is a deeply moving show that conjures not only a sense of geographical place, but encounters, memories, obligations, community and nature.

THE SAPPHIRES
The powerhouse voices and unbeatable soul music soundtrack on this inspirational film received a ten minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. Inspired by a true story, The Sapphires follows four vivacious, young and talented Australian Aboriginal girls from a remote mission as they learn about love, friendship and war when their all girl group entertains the U.S. troops in Vietnam in 1968.

CIRCA: WUNDERKAMMER
Australia’s Circa is world-renowned for its unique artistry — a distinctly 21st century circus that incorporates contemporary dance and performance art with virtuosic acrobatics, and discards most of the trappings of traditional circus in favor of unmediated, emotionally rich choreography. Having stunned audiences with a self-titled show in 2011, Circa returns to the Skirball Center with a new work - a breathtaking spectacle, full of sheer physical poetry.
